WB okays $400m to upgrade Bangladesh’s embankment system

DHAKA :: The World Bank on Thursday approved US$ 375 million in concessional financing and $25 million in grant to Bangladesh for increasing the resilience of the coastal population to climate change-induced flooding and other natural disasters. The assistance under the ‘Coastal Embankment Improvement Project’ will upgrade the country’s embankment system by increasing the area protected in polders from tidal flooding and frequent storm surges in six coastal districts. DHAKA :: US Trade Representative Mike Froman has said that his country has no plan to restrict clothing import from Bangladesh to put extra pressure on the South Asian nation to improve its safety conditions for workers, The top US trade official told reporters on Thursday he hoped that suspending US trade benefits on a number of non-textile goods would be enough to encourage the Bangladesh government to make necessary reforms, report agencies.
